6/25 - A Long Time Coming
By David Glore

As Mike already posted in the news blurbs, this past weekend, I competed in and won a Pro Tour Austin Qualifier in Little Rock, Arkansas. That much, you already know. What you may not know is the background behind the event, what it took to get me to play the deck I played, how I prepared for the event, and everyone responsible for helping me get prepared, keep my mind on the tournament and eventually get there.

News flash, peoples. I was one breath away from giving up competitive Magic all together. That’s right. After the 5k weekend in Atlanta, I was ready to quit. I had a streak of poor finishes, bad beats, and misplays aplenty. It was as though I had forgotten something about the game, something about my style, and how not to suck in general. If not for a certain few Magic players, one of whom I have never even met, I would have spent last Saturday cleaning my house and watching Boston Legal reruns.

6/17 - You Want Me to Play Creatures? Fine.
By David Glore

Last week, I griped about how the inexorable push towards a Magic: the Gathering in which we are forced into playing dudes, and foremost, I talked about how I can’t stand such heavy-handed tactics such as one-sided set design, poor Instants, and new combat rules. Well, you got me, Wizards, I guess I’ll just bite full-on into the apple of your design and play creatures: lots of them.

Okay, so going overboard and playing a spelless deck may seem a bit extreme, but hear me out: this deck is good. Manuel Bucher and a couple of other French players played it at Grand Prix Sao Paulo, and it has been quietly making Top 8’s, with one even qualifying its pilot for Japanese Nationals. The only issue is determining a sideboard, and that can be a daunting task, since one wrong one-of could spoil your entire tournament. What deck am I talking about, you say? Well, allow me to keep you in suspense for a while longer.

6/11 - The State of the Game
By David Glore

The state of Magic: the Gathering has always been in flux. From day Alpha/Beta to Unlimited, things changed. There was a huge outcry about white borders. Sometime later, there was an even bigger one about the Sixth Edition rules changes. Then there was the change on the busted timing rules of Urza Block. Then, there was the new cardface! ZOMG! How could they change our game that much?! Well, I’m here to tell you that I never complained, throughout all of my Magic-playing experience (some 15 years), about any of their changes. That ends today.

6/10 - New Rules for M10
Watch out Magic players. There are new rules coming into effect with M10. There are thousands of Magic players that feel the same way as you, good or bad: the new rules for M10 is another case of poor R&D. Is WOTC really that desperate to reach the newly disenfranchised Yu-Gi-Oh players? And if you are going to change the rules why not fix the Planeswalkers? I mean, the players are Planeswalkers so shouldn't all spells that affect the players (Earthquake, Hurricane, Volcanic Fallout) also affect the cards which are Planeswalkers?
